Our history

Colin Frier and Dick Bowdler in the early days of New AcousticsFounded in 1986 by Dick Bowdler and Colin Frier, New Acoustics has been providing a comprehensive acoustic consultancy service in Scotland, and across the UK, ever since.

Dick graduated with a degree in Physics and embarked on an early career in stage direction in London’s West End and New York’s Broadway. In 1970, he joined Sandy Brown Associates, one of the UK's first firms of acoustic consultants. He went on to become a partner, helping to set up and ultimately run the Scottish office for 13 years. Also at Sandy Brown, Colin was establishing his career in building acoustics having previously graduated with a degree in Building Economics and subsequently gaining Chartered Surveyor status. Whilst with Sandy Brown Associates, Colin completed a Masters in Acoustics, Noise and Vibration before leaving the company in 1985. He spent two years in a managerial position before reuniting with Dick to set up New Acoustics in 1987.

Dick and Colin founded New Acoustics on their joint vision of providing clear, concise and practical acoustic expertise and advice; a philosophy which New Acoustics are still committed to delivering on today. Based in Clydebank since the company’s inception, we have been at our current office at Queens Quay since 2010.

Anne Budd joined the company as a consultant in 2005, becoming a Director in 2006 and co-owner in 2012. In 2014, Martin Wilson joined New Acoustics as a consultant before becoming a Director and co-owner in 2016. Find out more about the current New Acoustics team here.
