HBOS headquarters, Edinburgh

Following the merger of the Halifax Building Society and the Bank of Scotland, the decision was taken to refurbish the headquarters on the mound to rediscover the original architect's vision for the building.

As part of this refurbishment, the Great Hall was opened up and restored to its original double-height form to make it the grand focus of the building. New Acoustics were employed to advise on all aspects of the build including ensuring the board rooms had acoustics fit for 21st-century video conferencing as well as excellent speech intelligibility for those in the room and that the restored Great Hall could be used as a modern, flexible, formal and informal meeting and conference facility.

The listed nature of the build required all design features including the acoustics to be sympatric to the original design. This was achieved through a number of means including the strategic placement of high end acoustic wall panelling and the selection and design of low noise ventilation and heating units.

The refurbishment was completed in May 2006.
